A vehicle title is like the social security card for your car. It defines ownership and protects its owners by proving whom is the true owner of the vehicle. However just like anything else it can be lost, stolen, or destroyed. CarRegistration is here to replace lost title’s quickly and easily.
Replacing a Lost Title
The Certificate of Title is one of the most important documents associated with your vehicle. A vehicle without a title cannot be bought or sold, so it is vital that vehicle owners always have a copy of their title in a safe place. It is not wise to keep your vehicle title in your car. This will only increase the chances of it being lost, damaged, or even stolen.
In the event that your title lost, stolen, or damaged to the point that it is no longer legible, you will need to apply for a duplicate title from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Only the legal owner of the vehicle can obtain a duplicate title.
Follow the instructions below to apply for a title in person, by mail, or online.
Applying For a Duplicate Title in Person
To begin, you will want to call 1-800-777-0133 to set up a duplicate title appointment at your local DMV to avoid waiting in line. This can also be done online using the DMV’s appointment system.
When your appointment arrives, go to the DMV and submit a completed Application for Duplicate Title Form. Be sure to include your name, address, license plate number, vehicle identification number, and missing title statement. It is important to note that the legal owner of the vehicle must sign the form and the form must be notarized (if the registration does not show a legal owner, notarization is not required). You are required to bring the damaged title with you (if it was not lost) and submit it to the DMV as well.
Applying For a Duplicate Title by Mail
If you don’t want to go to the DMV, you may choose to apply for a duplicate title by mail. Fill out an Application for Duplicate Title Form (make sure it is notarized unless the vehicle registration does not show a legal owner) and mail the document to:
Department of Motor Vehicles
Vehicle Registration Operations
P.O. Box 942869
Sacramento, CA 94269-0001
